Character Functions in thriller films – Spectre

Character Functions in thriller films – Spectre

Hero : James bond (Daniel Craig) is the protagonist and overall hero of the film, although he may be an assassin he only does tasks that benefit society, never harming innocent people only ever the antagonists.

Villain: The villain of the film was Oberhauser, who was James Bond brother from the family he got adopted from, he takes the role of the antagonist as he wants to ruin, destroy and overall just kill James Bond.

The dispatcher: The dispatcher of the film is ‘M’. In the movie M has actually died (this happened in the previous James Bond film that was out), however she has left a video message sent privately to Bond, asking him to investigate and solve something out, which evidently becomes the quest the audience watch throughout the film

The helper: There are two specific helpers within the film Spectre, which are Eve Moneypenny & ‘Q’, both of these characters are the general sidekicks of Bond, helping him complete his quest by for example, turning off Bond’s tracker to stop him from being found & also by giving Bond information whilst he is oversees which help move on the narrative.

The princess: the princess/love interest of the film is Madeleine Swann, which is infact the female that Bond potentially risks his life for and appears to give up his assassin lifestyle for (it is not clear what the future says for Bond with his job as an assassin)

The donor: The donor of the film would also be the same as the helpers, as they both offer James Bond some type of help that allow him to carry on his mission.

The false hero: Although this not being completely clear, there is definitely a false/fake ‘good guy’ within this film which is Denbigh, in which the beginning of the film he appears to be very good and innocent possibly even taking the role as the donor or helper but it is later revealed that he is infact a villain.

There is no clear ‘Father’ role within this film however.
