Summary of findings from target research

Summary of the response I got from my Survey Monkey survey.
(Disclaimer : My survey monkey currently is having trouble logging in, thus, I won’t be able to include screenshots/pictures within this) - I overall got 22 responses on my survey

1: What is your age?

Response – The majority of the age groups of people who answered this question ranged from aged 17 – 19, this getting an average age of 18. This was not a surprise to me because I was already aware of the type of people who would be answering my questions (the majority of them being my peers), and to add on to that, age 18 is the typical age many people start getting into thrillers and also fits within the target audience the majority of thriller movies have.

2: When watching a thriller film, what sub-genre do you prefer?

Response – The most favoured thriller sub-genre within this question was actually a tie between the physcological thriller and also the conspiracy thriller, which came as a bit of a surprise to me because I expected crime thrillers or action thrillers to take lead in this question.

3. What is it about that sub-genre (that you have just chosen) that you like so much?

Response – I looked specifically at the responses for the people who chose physcological thrillers or conspiracy thrillers as they were the sub-genres which took lead in the most favoured from the previous question. When looking at the responses they were equally quite similar, with the general reasoning being : “Because it is outside of the box/different/not like other movies.”

4. What is the main thing do you think makes a film opening (particularly thrillers) effective?

Response – The responses for this question mainly consisted of just how the way the film overall is represented and setting a good tone and atmosphere for the rest of the film.

5. Do you prefer a male or female protagonist? (hero)

Response - The majority of the responses picked that they would prefer a female protagonist, with that leading by 80%.

6. Do you prefer a female or male antagonist?  (villain)

Response - The majority of the responses picked that they would prefer a male protagonist, with that leading by 75%.

7. How important do you think these are within the opening of a film?

Response – This was one question that varied a lot and didn’t tend to have one definite order or significant pattern which made it quite difficult for me to get a clear of understanding of what my audience believe is most important and least.

8. For the one you ranked number 1, can you please explain why you consider it the most important?

Response – No clear pattern as stated in question above so response varied.

9. Do you prefer stereotypical thrillers or thrillers that are outside the box?

Response – 100%  of my responses agreed that they preferred thrillers which were outside of the box which gave me a clear idea of what and how I wanted my thriller movie to be like.

10. What is your favourite thriller movie?

Just like question 7, this question varied depending on the person who did the survey, only difference is that I had 3 mentions of the thriller film ‘Shutter Island’ & 5 mentions of the thriller film ‘The Dark Knight’. The Dark Knight kind of surprising me as it is an action thriller, and action thriller were not chosen within the second question.
